What do you observe?

**Solution**

1. When the plunger is pushed inward with the open end closed, the volume of air inside the syringe decreases.
2. This shows that gas particles have a lot of space between them, which can be reduced by applying external pressure.

**Answer:** The volume of air inside the syringe decreases as the gas particles are forced closer together.

> Common mistake: Thinking that the air inside disappears rather than being compressed into a smaller volume.
