SwaVid visual puzzle

A farm has 35 chickens and rabbits in total. Together they have 94 legs. How many chickens and rabbits are there?

Detailed solution

Pretend every animal is a chicken, then see how many extra legs are left over.

35 chickens would have 2 legs each.

There are 24 more legs than that. Each rabbit adds 2 extra legs compared with a chicken.

The rest are chickens.

Guessing 17 and 18 splits the heads evenly, but that gives 34 + 72 = 106 legs.

- 1 Assume all chickens 35 chickens would have 2 legs each. 35 × 2 = 70 legs
- 2 Count the extra legs There are 24 more legs than that. Each rabbit adds 2 extra legs compared with a chicken. 94 − 70 = 24 → 24 ÷ 2 = 12 rabbits
- 3 Find the chickens and check The rest are chickens. 35 − 12 = 23; 23 × 2 + 12 × 4 = 46 + 48 = 94 ✓
