- For any event E, the probability of the event happening, P(E), and the probability of the event not happening, P(not E), always sum up to 1. This is the concept of complementary events.
- An event that cannot happen has a probability of 0. Such an event is known as an impossible event.
- An event that is certain to happen has a probability of 1. Such an event is known as a sure or certain event.
- Elementary events are the individual outcomes of an experiment. The sum of the probabilities of all possible elementary events in an experiment is always 1.
- The probability of any event must lie between 0 and 1, inclusive. It cannot be negative or greater than 1.
