# How to choose an AI tutor for CBSE Classes 6-10

**TL;DR: Your child isn't bad at Maths. They're missing one idea from two years ago. A useful AI tutor finds that idea, repairs it, then checks whether they can explain it. A homework chatbot only answers tonight's sum.**

Written by Preet Shah, founder of SwaVid, for Indian parents of Classes 6-10 choosing between a chat window and a learning system. This page does not rank products and does not claim that any tutor raises board marks.

## What should an AI tutor for CBSE actually do?

Class 8 linear equations sit on Class 6 fractions and equality. Class 8 friction sits on Class 7 motion. If the earlier idea was never repaired, repeating this year's chapter will look like effort and feel like failure. So a tutor should:

1. Find the missing prerequisite, not only the current exercise.
2. Teach that idea with a concrete or visual model before the shortcut.
3. Fade the help, then ask the child to explain it unaided.
4. Show the parent the repair order, not an internal score.

## Homework chatbot versus diagnosis-first tutor

| | Chat homework helper | Diagnosis-first tutor |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | The question typed into the box | The learner, the chapter, and what came before |
| What happens next | An answer or worked solution | A teaching path: diagnose, repair, teach, check |
| After the session | The conversation ends | Evidence shapes the next session |
| What parents get | A transcript | A repair order and the next useful step |

## Five questions to ask before you pay

1. Does it find the missing earlier idea, or only re-explain today's chapter?
2. Is it bound to NCERT class, chapter and concept, or an open chat that can wander?
3. Does the child have to explain the idea back, or only tap an answer?
4. Does a parent see the next repair step, or a chat history?
5. Does it fade the help, or keep giving the method forever?

## What the evidence can and cannot say

- 25.6% of Class 5 students in India can solve a basic division problem, a Class 3 skill (ASER 2022).
- About half of school-achievement differences trace to missing prerequisites (Bloom, 1976).
- SwaVid's curriculum model traces one unrepaired Class 6 idea into fourteen struggling topics by Class 9.
- Classroom validation at Apple Global School found 85% of learning profiles confirmed accurate by the teachers who taught those students. That is a validation of profile quality, not an efficacy study, and it does not measure grade improvement.

## What to do tonight

Ask your child to show you the one sum they got wrong, not the ones they got right. Ask them to explain the step they are unsure of. If they can do the procedure and cannot say why, the gap is earlier than this week's chapter. The free Learning Debt Identifier maps that gap across NCERT Maths or Science and returns a repair order: https://www.swavid.com/learning-debt-identifier

## Questions parents ask

### What should I look for in an AI tutor for CBSE Class 8 Maths?
Diagnosis of the missing prerequisite, NCERT alignment, a check that the child can explain the idea without help, and a parent view of the next repair step. Instant homework answers without that sequence are not tutoring.

### Is an AI tutor the same as ChatGPT for homework?
No. A chat reply resolves today. A tutor maps the earlier idea that made today's chapter collapse, teaches it, and carries evidence into the next session.

### Why is my child stuck if they were fine till Class 6?
One unrepaired idea does not stay in Class 6. Place value affects decimals. Fractions affect ratio and algebra. A 60 in Maths tells you something is wrong. It cannot tell you the problem started at fractions in Class 6.

### Will an AI tutor raise marks?
SwaVid does not promise a better score. What a diagnosis-first tutor can show is the gap, the repair order, and a re-check of whether the child can explain the idea.

### Is there a free way to see the gap tonight?
Yes. The Learning Debt Identifier is a free NCERT Maths or Science scan. It returns a repair order, not a score.

### How much does SwaVid cost?
Free to start. Paid plans are ₹700 per month for Pro and ₹1,200 per month for Max, GST-inclusive, and new families get Pro free for the first 2 months. https://www.swavid.com/pricing

## When SwaVid is the wrong choice

- The child is not in Classes 6-10. SwaVid covers Classes 6 to 10 only, and there is no primary or senior-secondary version.
- The subject is not NCERT Mathematics or Science. Languages, Social Science and other subjects are not covered.
- You need a curriculum other than CBSE / NCERT. SwaVid teaches the NCERT sequence; it is not built around IB, IGCSE or a state-board syllabus, and it is not competitive-exam coaching.
- You want a guaranteed rise in marks or rank. SwaVid does not promise a better score. It can show the gap, the repair order, and whether the child can now explain the idea.
- You want tonight's homework answered. The teaching path deliberately diagnoses and repairs an earlier idea first, which is slower than an answer.
- You want a live human tutor. Teaching is AI-led, with parent-facing summaries rather than a scheduled human session.
- You are buying for an institution. SwaVid is sold to families.
- You want to judge it by public reviews. SwaVid publishes no rating or review data, so there is none to cite.
- You need a native app store download. SwaVid runs in a modern browser with JavaScript enabled; there is no published app store listing yet.
