- Repeat the helper and flip not . Use the same helper as the statement: is, are, was, were, can, will, has, have, had, should, could. Add n't, or take it away.
- Use a pronoun . The tag ends with a pronoun for the subject: he for a boy or man, she for a girl or woman, it for a thing, they for many. I, you and we stay the same.
- No helper? Use do, does or did . If the statement has no helper, borrow one. Use do or does for the present and did for the past.
- Three special cases . Most tags repeat the helper. Three do not. After I am, use aren't I. After a command, use will you. After Let's, use shall we.
- I am: aren't I . I am is positive, so the tag is negative: aren't I. We do not say amn't I or isn't I. Am I not is also right, but formal.
- Positive statement, negative tag. Negative statement, positive tag.
- I am: aren't I. Commands: will you. Let's: shall we.
