Short answer. The verb must agree with its real subject. In a box of pens, the subject is box. Each, everybody, nobody and news are singular. Two subjects joined by and are plural.

1 . Common errors. Which sentence is correct?

2 . Choose the right word. Papa stood in the queue at the bank for ___ hour.

The verb must agree with its real subject. In a box of pens, the subject is box. Each, everybody, nobody and news are singular. Two subjects joined by and are plural.

A bunch of grapes is on the plate. Raju and Sonu are cousins. Everybody likes the new teacher.

Wrong: We have gone to Ooty last May. Right: We went to Ooty last May. (Time words choose the tense) Wrong: Mohan has took my pen. Right: Mohan has taken my pen. (The V3 form)

Your child's level and 3 topics to fix first.

All the topics in this chapter, one rule at a time.

- Time words choose the tense . Yesterday, ago and last week need the simple past. Since and for, reaching up to now, need the present perfect. Now and listen need the present continuous. After if or when, a future idea uses the simple present.
- The V3 form . After has, have or had, use the V3 form: gone, eaten, written. A passive with was or were also needs the V3 form. Irregular verbs have their own forms, so learn them: write, wrote, written.
- What comes after the verb . After should, must, may, can and would, use the base verb with no to and no -s. Enjoy, finish, avoid, keep and practise take -ing. Want, decide, hope, refuse and promise take to plus the base verb.
- After said or told . After said or told in the past, move the verb one step back: is becomes was, will becomes would, can becomes could, has becomes had. An earlier past event takes had plus V3.
- Check the small words . Many mistakes hide in small words. Choose a or an by the first sound. Use the preposition that goes with the word before it. Give each joining word its own partner.
- A bunch of grapes is on the plate.
- Raju and Sonu are cousins.
- Everybody likes the new teacher.
- Sana ate an apple and a banana.
- Jaya is a careful driver. careful describes driver
- Jaya drives carefully. carefully tells how
- We have gone to Ooty last May. → We went to Ooty last May. Time words choose the tense
- Mohan has took my pen. → Mohan has taken my pen. The V3 form
- You must to wear a cap. → You must wear a cap. What comes after the verb
- Kunal is good in chess. → Kunal is good at chess. Preposition pairs
