### More in The Verb

Short answer. Regular verbs add ed for the past. Add only d if the verb ends in e. A consonant plus y changes to ied. A vowel plus y keeps the y and adds ed.

1 . Choose the past form. Meera ___ for her maths test last night. (study)

2 . Pick the kind of verb "ride" is. Priya rode her bicycle to school.

Add ed; add d after e; consonant plus y becomes ied; vowel plus y adds ed.

Regular verbs add ed for the past. Add only d if the verb ends in e. A consonant plus y changes to ied. A vowel plus y keeps the y and adds ed.

cook, cooked (regular) sing, sang (irregular) V1 write, V2 wrote: strong (the vowel changes)

Wrong: Kunal catched the ball. Right: Kunal caught the ball. (Irregular verbs) Wrong: Dev catched the ball. Right: Dev caught the ball. (The past form (V2))

Your child's level and 3 topics to fix first.

All the topics in this chapter, one rule at a time.

- Add d, or change y . Look at the last letters. A final e takes only d. For y, look at the letter before it.
- Doubling the last letter . A one-syllable verb with one short vowel and one final consonant doubles that consonant. Two final consonants, or two vowels, mean no doubling.
- Longer verbs . In a two-syllable verb, double the last consonant only if the stress is on the last part. If the stress is on the first part, just add ed.
- Regular and irregular verbs . Regular verbs make the past by adding -ed: walk, walked. Irregular verbs change in their own way: teach, taught. Irregular verbs are also called strong verbs, and regular verbs are called weak verbs.
- Regular verbs . A regular verb makes its past by adding -ed to the base verb. Nothing else changes.
- cook, cooked regular
- sing, sang irregular
- V1 write, V2 wrote: strong the vowel changes
- V1 send, V2 sent: weak it adds t

- Dev catched the ball. → Dev caught the ball. The past form (V2)
