Short answer. A pronoun like he, she, it or they takes the place of a noun. It is clear only if the reader can tell exactly which noun it stands for. If it could mean two, it is unclear.

1 . Is the pronoun clear? Mohan told Karan that he had won.

2 . Which sentence is correct?

If a pronoun could mean two things, use the name.

A pronoun like he, she, it or they takes the place of a noun. It is clear only if the reader can tell exactly which noun it stands for. If it could mean two, it is unclear.

Unclear: Priya told Sneha that she was late. (Priya or Sneha?)

Wrong: Pooja met Divya at the mela, but she lost her bag. Right: Pooja met Divya at the mela, but Divya lost her bag. (Fix it with the name)

- Spot the doubt . Check the people or things named before the pronoun. Two of the same kind, like two girls or two boys, make the pronoun risky. If only one fits, it is clear.
- Fix it with the name . To fix an unclear pronoun, put the name or noun in its place. Do not swap in another pronoun like her or him. A clear sentence is better than a short one.
- It, they and which too . Things can be unclear as well. If it, they or which could point to two things, name the thing you mean.
- Unclear: Priya told Sneha that she was late. Priya or Sneha?
- Pooja met Divya at the mela, but she lost her bag. → Pooja met Divya at the mela, but Divya lost her bag. Fix it with the name
