Management is the process of getting things done with the aim of achieving goals effectively and efficiently. Process refers to the primary functions of planning, organising, staffing, directing, and controlling.

Effectiveness is about finishing the given task on time and achieving the final result. Efficiency means doing the task correctly with minimum cost and optimum use of resources.

Management is goal-oriented, all-pervasive, multidimensional, continuous, a group activity, a dynamic function, and an intangible force. It manages work, people, and operations simultaneously.

Management seeks to fulfill organisational, social, and personal objectives. Organisational objectives focus on survival, profit, and growth of the enterprise.

Management is an art because it requires personal application of theoretical knowledge. It is an inexact social science based on principles, and it shows some features of a profession but lacks a legally enforced code of conduct.

Top management plans overall goals and policies for the firm. Middle management interprets these policies and leads departments, while supervisory or operational management directly oversees workers and daily output.

Coordination synchronises the activities of different departments and integrates individual efforts toward common goals. It is not a separate function but the binding force present across all functions and levels.

Cost increased by 25 percent above budget due to excess expenses: Manager is not efficient.

Evaluate overall status: The manager is effective but not efficient.

Effective but not efficient

Check functions: Direct supervision of workers and shop-floor safety belong to the supervisory or operational tier.

A foreman works directly above workers and reports to middle management, fulfilling supervisory roles.

Identify level: Supervisory or operational level of management.

Supervisory (or operational) level of management

Identify need: Synchronising activities and linking group efforts across separate departments.

- Ch 1 NCERT book
- 80 marks, theory paper
- 3 quick checks
- Treating effectiveness and efficiency as the same concept . Remember that effectiveness focuses on the end result and time, while efficiency focuses on cost and resource utilisation. A manager can complete a task on time (effective) but exceed the budget (inefficient).
- Classifying coordination as a separate sixth function of management . Treat coordination as the essence of management, not a separate stage. It is embedded inside planning, organising, staffing, directing, and controlling.
- Calling management a full-fledged profession like law or medicine . Recognise that management does not yet have a statutory regulatory body, a legally mandated code of conduct, or restricted entry, although it has a well-defined body of knowledge.
- Confusing middle level management roles with operational management roles . Middle level managers link top leaders with first-line supervisors by interpreting policy and organising departments. First-line or operational managers directly supervise workers on the floor.
