Marketing is a social process through which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want by creating, offering, and freely exchanging products and services of value. Its key features include satisfying needs and wants, creating a market offering, providing customer value, and using an exchange mechanism.

Businesses adopt one of five main orientations: production concept (focus on availability and affordability), product concept (focus on product quality and performance), selling concept (focus on aggressive selling and promotion), marketing concept (focus on customer satisfaction), and societal marketing concept (focus on customer satisfaction along with social and ecological welfare).

Marketing involves several key activities including gathering market information, market planning, product design and development, standardisation and grading, packaging and labelling, branding, pricing, physical distribution, transportation, and storage or warehousing.

Product mix refers to the combination of all products offered by a firm. It includes decisions relating to branding (identifying and differentiating the product), packaging (protecting and promoting the product), and labelling (providing required information and statutory warnings).

Price is the amount of money paid by a customer to obtain a product. Pricing decisions depend on factors such as product cost, utility and demand, extent of competition in the market, government regulations, pricing objectives, and marketing methods used.

Physical distribution involves making products available at the right place and time. It covers the selection of distribution channels (direct or indirect) and physical components such as order processing, transportation, warehousing, and inventory control.

Promotion mix consists of tools used to communicate with customers and persuade them to buy. The four main elements are advertising (paid, non-personal communication), personal selling (face-to-face interaction), sales promotion (short-term incentives), and public relations (building goodwill).

Primary package is the immediate container touching or closest to the product.

Here, the plastic blister pack directly holds the toothbrush, so it is the primary package.

Transportation package is the outermost layer used for bulk movement and storage, which is the wooden crate.

Primary package is the plastic blister pack; transportation package is the wooden crate

- Treating selling and marketing as identical terms . Selling focuses on pushing existing goods to buyers through sales techniques, while marketing starts before production to identify customer needs and ends with customer satisfaction.
- Confusing primary packaging with secondary packaging . Primary packaging is the immediate container that remains with the product until use, such as a toothpaste tube. Secondary packaging is the extra layer discarded upon opening, such as the cardboard box holding the tube.
- Classifying advertising as a personal form of communication . Advertising is strictly an impersonal, paid form of communication by an identified sponsor. Personal selling is the face-to-face, personal form of promotion.
- Confusing sales promotion with advertising . Sales promotion uses short-term incentives like discounts, rebates, and contests to encourage immediate purchase, whereas advertising aims to inform and persuade over time.
