Short answer. Directing refers to the process of instructing, guiding, counselling, motivating, and leading people in an organisation to achieve stated goals. It initiates action and relies on four key elements: supervision, motivation, leadership, and communication.

Directing is the managerial function that initiates organised action. It takes place at every level of management, flows from top to bottom, and is a continuous process throughout the life of an enterprise.

Effective directing relies on key principles such as maximum individual contribution, harmony of objectives, unity of command, and appropriateness of direction technique. It also requires managerial communication, use of informal organisation, and follow-through.

The four central elements of directing are supervision, motivation, leadership, and communication. Managers rely on these elements to guide and inspire employees towards organisational goals.

Motivation is the process of stimulating people to action to accomplish desired goals. Maslow's hierarchy organises human needs into physiological, safety, affiliation or belonging, esteem, and self-actualisation needs, moving from lower to higher levels.

Incentives spur employees to improve performance. Financial incentives include pay, allowances, bonus, and profit sharing, while non-financial incentives include status, recognition, job security, and employee participation.

Leadership is the activity of influencing people to strive willingly for group objectives. Key leadership styles include autocratic or authoritarian, democratic or participative, and laissez-faire or free-rein.

Communication is the transfer of information and understanding from one person to another through formal or informal channels. Effective communication can be blocked by semantic, psychological, organisational, and personal barriers.

- Treating motive, motivator, and motivation as identical terms . Differentiate them clearly: a motive is the inner drive, motivation is the overarching process, and a motivator is the specific technique or incentive used to influence behaviour.
- Classifying job security or recognition as financial incentives . Classify direct monetary rewards such as bonus and commission as financial, while psychic and social satisfactions such as job security, status, and praise are non-financial incentives.
- Confusing semantic barriers with psychological barriers in communication . Remember that semantic barriers relate to language, vocabulary, and symbols, whereas psychological barriers arise from emotional states, premature evaluation, and distrust.
- Assuming democratic leadership means complete lack of leader intervention . A democratic leader consults subordinates and takes decisions with group participation, whereas complete delegation without intervention is laissez-faire leadership.
