Class 12 Biology, Chapter 3. Key ideas, formulas and common mistakes.

CBSE prints 16 marks for Unit VI, not for this chapter alone.

Short answer. This chapter covers reproductive health problems, population control strategies, contraception, medical termination of pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and assisted reproductive technologies. Students learn how scientific interventions and responsible practices ensure complete physical, emotional, behavioural, and social reproductive well-being.

According to the WHO, reproductive health means total well-being in physical, emotional, behavioural, and social aspects of reproduction. India initiated national programmes called Family Planning in 1951, which were later expanded under Reproductive and Child Health Care (RCH) programmes.

Amniocentesis is a foetal sex and disorder determination test based on chromosomal patterns in amniotic fluid cells. A statutory ban on amniocentesis for sex determination exists in India to stop female foeticide.

Contraceptive methods prevent unwanted pregnancies and include natural, barrier, IUDs, oral pills, injectables, implants, and surgical methods. Saheli is an oral contraceptive pill for females developed by CDRI Lucknow that is non-steroidal and taken once a week.

IUDs are inserted by doctors into the uterus through the vagina. They include non-medicated IUDs like Lippes loop, copper-releasing IUDs like CuT, Cu7, and Multiload 375, and hormone-releasing IUDs like Progestasert and LNG-20.

Medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) is intentional or voluntary termination of pregnancy before full term. MTP is relatively safe during the first trimester up to 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Infections transmitted through sexual intercourse are called sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or venereal diseases (VD). Except for hepatitis-B, genital herpes, and HIV infections, most STIs are completely curable if detected early and treated properly.

Infertility is the inability to conceive or produce children despite unprotected sexual cohabitation. Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) include IVF-ET (such as ZIFT and IUT), GIFT, ICSI, and artificial insemination (including IUI).

Identify the developmental stage of the embryo: 6 blastomeres (which is up to 8 blastomeres).

Embryos up to 8 blastomeres are transferred into the fallopian tube.

This specific method is Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer (ZIFT).

ZIFT (Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer)

Multiload 375 is a copper-releasing intrauterine device.

It promotes phagocytosis of sperms within the uterus.

The released copper ions suppress sperm motility and their fertilising capacity.

Suppresses sperm motility and fertilising capacity by releasing copper ions, alongside increasing sperm phagocytosis

Low sperm count can be overcome by directly introducing semen into the female reproductive tract or injecting a sperm into an ovum.

Technique 1: Artificial insemination or intra-uterine insemination (IUI).

Technique 2: Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in vitro.

Intra-uterine insemination (IUI) and intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

- Ch 3 NCERT book
- 16 marks, Unit VI
- 3 quick checks
- Confusing ZIFT and IUT transfer sites and embryo stages . Remember that ZIFT transfers embryos with up to 8 blastomeres into the fallopian tube, whereas IUT transfers embryos with more than 8 blastomeres into the uterus.
- Classifying GIFT as in vitro fertilisation . GIFT involves in vivo fertilisation, because unfertilised gametes are transferred into the fallopian tube where fertilisation takes place naturally inside the body.
- Thinking all sexually transmitted infections are completely curable . Note that hepatitis-B, genital herpes, and HIV infections are not completely curable, even when detected early.
- Assuming copper IUDs prevent ovulation . Copper IUDs increase phagocytosis of sperms and suppress sperm motility and fertilising capacity, but they do not stop ovulation.
