Statistical tools are needed to make sense of raw economic facts. They help analyse real-world issues such as poverty, unemployment, and price changes systematically.

A statistical project begins with identifying a clear problem or objective. This is followed by collection, organisation, presentation, analysis, and interpretation of data.

Data can be primary, collected directly via questionnaires or interviews, or secondary from published sources. Tables, bar diagrams, and pie charts are used to present the findings clearly.

Measures of central tendency like the mean or median provide representative values. Correlation coefficients help examine relationships between two different economic variables.

The final stage involves explaining what the analysed figures mean in the context of the problem. A concluding report outlines findings, limitations, and possible policy suggestions.

Sum of expenditure = 4000 + 5000 + 4500 + 6000 + 5500 = 25000

Number of households n = 5

Mean = 25000 / 5 = 5000

₹ 5000

r = 48 / (√64 × √36)

r = 48 / (8 × 6) = 48 / 48 = 1

1

Arrange in ascending order: 12, 15, 18, 20, 25

n = 5, so median position = (5 + 1) / 2 = 3rd item

3rd item = 18

- Ch 8 NCERT book
- 80 marks, theory paper
- 3 quick checks
- Using statistical tools without defining clear objectives . Always state the exact objective of the study first. Statistical tools are selected based on the questions being investigated.
- Confusing correlation with causation in interpretation . A high correlation between two variables does not prove that one causes the other. Explain the relationship carefully without assuming direct cause and effect.
- Treating the conclusion as just a repetition of tables . Interpret what the numbers signify for the real-world problem rather than simply re-reading the numbers from the tables.
