Economics is the study of how people earn and spend income in the ordinary business of life. It helps understand how individuals make choices when faced with scarcity of resources to satisfy unlimited wants.

A consumer buys goods and services to satisfy personal wants, and this act is called consumption. A producer manufactures or provides goods and services to create value and earn income.

A person who works for another and receives wages or salary is a service holder. A person who provides a service to others for a payment, such as a doctor or a lawyer, is a service provider.

Activities undertaken for monetary gain or to earn a living are economic activities. Scarcity of resources in relation to human wants is the root cause of all economic problems.

In the plural sense, statistics means numerical facts systematically collected, placed in relation to each other, and affected by a multiplicity of causes. An isolated numerical figure does not constitute statistics.

In the singular sense, statistics refers to the science or method of dealing with numerical data. It covers five main stages: collection, organisation, presentation, analysis, and interpretation of data.

Statistics helps an economist present economic facts in a precise numerical form, condense large masses of data, and study relationships between variables like price and demand. It is essential for formulating policies to address economic problems like poverty and unemployment.

Check if the statement gives an aggregate of facts or a single isolated figure.

The statement gives the score of only one individual in one match.

A single isolated numerical figure cannot be compared and is not an aggregate of facts.

No, because it is an isolated numerical fact and not an aggregate of facts.

A government school teacher works for an employer and receives a salary, making them a service holder.

A dentist in private practice offers services to patients for a fee, making them a service provider.

(a) Service holder, (b) Service provider

Recall the five systematic steps taught in statistics as a method.

First data is collected, then organised, then presented, then analysed, and finally interpreted.

- Ch 1 NCERT book
- 80 marks, theory paper
- 3 quick checks
- Treating a single, isolated number as statistics . Statistics in the plural sense requires an aggregate of comparable facts; a single number like 'Rohan's height is 160 cm' is not statistics.
- Confusing a service holder with a service provider . Identify whether the person works under an employer for a wage or salary (service holder) or offers an independent service to clients for a fee (service provider).
- Thinking qualitative statements qualify as statistics . Qualitative statements such as 'prices are high' or 'poverty is rising' are not statistics unless they are expressed in numerical form.
