Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises are classified based on composite criteria of investment in plant and machinery or equipment and annual turnover under the MSMED Act. This common classification applies to both manufacturing and service sectors.

Small businesses generate large-scale employment opportunities next only to agriculture. They promote balanced regional development, mobilise local resources, and contribute significantly to industrial output and exports.

Entrepreneurship is the process of setting up a business by identifying an opportunity and assembling necessary resources. The person who undertakes this effort is an entrepreneur, and the resulting outcome is the enterprise.

Entrepreneurship drives innovation, wealth creation, and structural change in an economy. The entrepreneurial process involves self-discovery, identifying opportunities, generating ideas, planning, raising resources, launching, and managing the business.

The Start-up India initiative aims to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation and start-ups in the country. It offers benefits such as simplified compliance, tax exemptions, patent support, and funding assistance.

Intellectual property rights legally protect unique creations of the human mind from unauthorised commercial use. Common forms include patents for inventions, trademarks for brand identifiers, and copyrights for creative works.

Check investment limit: 8 crore rupees is less than or equal to 10 crore rupees.

Check turnover limit: 42 crore rupees is less than or equal to 50 crore rupees.

Both conditions fall above the micro limit but within the small enterprise ceiling.

Small enterprise

Investment is 0.8 crore rupees, which is within the micro limit of 1 crore rupees.

Turnover is 7 crore rupees, which exceeds the micro limit of 5 crore rupees but is within the small limit of 50 crore rupees.

Because turnover exceeds the micro ceiling, the firm shifts to the higher category.

Small enterprise

Identify the nature of creation: it is an original, technical invention.

Match with IPR types: inventions with technical novelty are protected by patents.

- Treating manufacturing and service enterprises under separate investment slabs . Use the composite criteria under the updated MSME definition, which treats manufacturing and service enterprises identically based on investment and turnover.
- Confusing an entrepreneur with an enterprise . Remember that the entrepreneur is the individual actor, entrepreneurship is the process, and the enterprise is the resulting business unit.
- Assuming copyright covers raw ideas or concepts . Note that copyright protects the expression of an idea in a tangible form, not the underlying idea or concept itself.
