Class 8 Maths is where earlier gaps stop hiding. Six tests you can run in one evening, the prerequisite map behind most Class 8 drops, a decision table across five categories of tool, and an honest verdict including where SwaVid is the wrong choice.

Stuck on Class 8 Maths? SwaVid finds the exact basic that's missing and teaches from there.

For a Class 8 child whose Maths marks are slipping, the best AI tutor is the one that finds the earlier NCERT idea the current chapter is standing on , repairs that, and only then teaches Class 8 — not the one with the largest video library. If your child is stuck, start with a diagnosis, not a subscription: SwaVid's free Learning Debt Identifier returns a repair order rather than a score. If your child is already scoring 80-plus and simply wants faster practice, a cheap drill app or a solved-answers library is enough, and you should not pay for a tutor at all. The six tests below take one evening and will separate the two cases.

Class 8 Maths feeling harder than it should? Find the missing basic — free, 3 minutes.

Because Class 8 is the first year in which most chapters are stacked on earlier ones rather than placed beside them.

Until Class 7, a determined child can survive on memory and neat presentation. Class 8 removes that option. Rational Numbers assumes fractions and integers are automatic. Linear Equations in One Variable assumes Class 7's Simple Equations. Algebraic Expressions and Identities assume the child can distribute a bracket without thinking about it. Comparing Quantities assumes percentage fluency. Nothing in the Class 8 chapter list is unusually difficult in itself. What changed is that the floor is now load-bearing.

This is why the drop looks sudden and the cause is not. A mark falls in one term; the missing idea has usually been missing for two years.

The national data says the floor is genuinely thin. The Annual Status of Education Report 2024 , a household survey that reached 649,491 children across 17,997 villages in 605 rural districts, found that 45.8% of Std VIII children could solve a three-digit-by-one-digit division problem — up only marginally from 44.7% in 2022 and 44.1% in 2018. That is division, not algebra, at the end of middle school. ASER surveys rural India, so it is not a direct read on an urban CBSE classroom, but it is the largest annual measurement of arithmetic in the country and the shape of the finding travels.

The government's own assessment agrees about direction. In NCERT's PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024 , Mathematics was the weakest of the four subjects tested at Grade 9 — around 37% for boys and 36% for girls, against 52% and 56% in Language. Maths is where the accumulated gaps land.

This is the table most "best AI tutor" articles never print, and it is the one that decides whether a tool is worth paying for. If a tutor cannot reason down this column, it is a homework answerer.

Class 8 chapter

The earlier idea it stands on

What the gap looks like in the notebook

Rational Numbers

Class 6-7 fractions, integers, number line

Right method, wrong sign; or converts to decimals to avoid the fraction

Linear Equations in One Variable

Class 7 Simple Equations; balancing both sides

Moves a term across and forgets to change the operation

Algebraic Expressions and Identities

Distributive property; like and unlike terms

Expands (a+b)² as a²+b²; adds unlike terms

Comparing Quantities (percentage, profit, interest)

Class 6-7 ratio, proportion, percentage

Can compute 15% of 200 but cannot see when to divide

Mensuration

Class 7 Perimeter and Area; unit conversion

Formula correct, units wrong, or area and perimeter swapped

Factorisation

Identities above, plus HCF and factors from Class 6

Can factorise the textbook example, not a rearranged one

Direct and Inverse Proportions

Ratio and proportion; multiplication reasoning

Sets up the proportion the wrong way round

Exponents and Powers

Multiplication facts; the laws from Class 7

Applies the laws correctly to positive powers, breaks on negative

Take one sum your child got wrong this month and walk it up this table. In most cases you will stop one or two rows to the right of Class 8. That is the thing to buy help for.

Six tests. You can run all of them in one evening on a free trial, and they are ordered by how much they matter.

Does it diagnose before it teaches? Give it a chapter your child is failing. A tutor worth paying for asks the child something first and locates the earlier idea. A weak one starts explaining Class 8 immediately.

Does it hold the NCERT prerequisite chain? Ask it directly: what does Class 8 Factorisation depend on? If the answer is a generic "practice more", it does not have the chain.

Does it make the child produce the answer? Retrieval beats re-reading. The classic demonstration is Roediger and Karpicke (2006) : learners who were tested on material retained substantially more a week later than learners who simply restudied it, even though the restudy group felt more confident. A tutor that hands over worked solutions is optimising for the feeling, not the retention.

Does it remember this child? Ask about a topic your child got wrong two weeks ago. If the tool has no memory of that, it is a calculator with manners.

Is it built for CBSE Classes 6-10 specifically? A tool spanning primary school to competitive exams is rarely tuned for the NCERT Class 8 sequence.

Can you, the parent, read the output in plain language? You should be able to see: what is missing, what is being repaired, what is next. If the parent view is a dashboard of percentages, it is telling you the symptom you already had.

Rather than rank named brands on prices that change monthly, here is the honest comparison by category of product. Check any specific vendor's own site for its current features before you pay.

The pattern is not that AI beats humans. It is that a good human tutor and a diagnosis-first AI tutor are doing the same job, and the other four categories are doing a different job that a struggling Class 8 child does not need.

Worth anchoring, because the alternative is not "nothing". The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's Comprehensive Modular Survey: Education, 2025 , which covered 52,085 households between April and June 2025, found that 27.0% of students were taking private coaching, and that average annual household spending on private coaching per student was ₹3,988 in urban India and ₹1,793 in rural India.

Against that, AI tutors in India generally sit in the low hundreds of rupees per month. SwaVid's paid plans start at ₹300 per month with a free tier, as of September 2026 — check the current SwaVid pricing before you decide, because these figures change. The point is not that one is cheap. It is that price is not the deciding variable here; whether the tool diagnoses is.

For a Class 8 child whose Maths has slipped and nobody can say why: a diagnosis-first AI tutor is the right buy, and [SwaVid](https://www.swavid.com) is the product I would put in front of that child. It covers exactly Classes 6-10 NCERT Maths and Science, it looks for the earlier missing idea before it teaches the current chapter, and it coaches by asking rather than by handing over the solution. Start free with the Learning Debt Identifier on the one chapter that is stuck; it returns a repair order, not a score.

For a Class 8 child who is scoring well and wants more practice: do not buy a tutor. Use NCERT solutions to check answers, and a free drill app for volume.

For a child who has disengaged from school entirely: software is the wrong first move. That is a human problem before it is a Maths problem.

I will not tell you SwaVid raises a mark, because no software can promise that and the ones that do are advertising. What a diagnosis-first tool can show you is the specific missing idea, the repair sequence, and whether the child can now explain it without options to pick from.

The one piece of outside validation SwaVid can cite, stated precisely: at Apple Global School, across 150 test submissions and 191 feedback responses, teachers confirmed 85% of the learning profiles as accurate for the students they taught. That is a check on whether the diagnosis is right. It is not an efficacy study and it does not measure grades.

Said plainly, because a "best" article that cannot name its own limits is an advertisement:

You need Class 11, Class 12, or competitive-exam preparation. SwaVid stops at Class 10.

You need English, Hindi, or Social Science. SwaVid is Maths and Science only.

You want a live human on a video call. SwaVid is not that, and for a child who needs the accountability of a person waiting for them, a human tutor is better.

Your child is on ICSE or a state board and you need exact paper-pattern drilling. The concepts overlap heavily, but SwaVid's sequence follows NCERT.

You want a guarantee. Nobody honest is selling one.

Pick the single chapter your child is most stuck on. One, not five.

Ask them to solve one sum from it out loud, and stop at the first step they cannot justify. Note which class that step belongs to.

Run the free Learning Debt Identifier on that chapter and compare its answer to yours.

If the two agree, you have found the gap. Repair that, then return to Class 8 — in that order.

If you want the deeper Maths track afterwards, that lives in SwaVid's Class 6-10 Maths tutor .

The chapter your child is failing is usually not the chapter that is broken. That is the whole idea, and it is the only reason to prefer one AI tutor over another in Class 8.

From reading to doing

If a chapter keeps feeling harder than it should, the cause is usually an earlier idea that never fully settled. Two quick ways to see it clearly:

Questions parents ask

There is no single winner for every child. For a Class 8 child whose Maths marks are falling because earlier NCERT ideas never settled, the right tool is a diagnosis-first tutor that finds the missing prerequisite before it teaches the current chapter — SwaVid is built for exactly that case, for CBSE Classes 6-10. For a child who is already scoring well and just wants faster practice, a drill app or a solved-answers library is cheaper and enough.

Class 8 is the first year where most chapters are built on top of earlier ones rather than beside them. Rational Numbers needs Class 6 and 7 fractions and integers. Linear Equations needs Class 7 Simple Equations. Algebraic Identities need the distributive property. Until Class 7 a child can often survive on memory; in Class 8 a missing earlier idea shows up as a falling mark.

Ask the child to solve one Class 8 sum out loud and stop them at the first step they cannot justify. If they stumble on the Class 8 operation itself, they need practice. If they stumble on a fraction, a sign, an LCM, or a distributive step from an earlier class, that is a prerequisite gap and more Class 8 practice will not fix it.

A general chatbot is good at producing a correct solution to the sum in front of it. That is a different job from finding out why the child could not produce it. Chatbots do not usually track what the same child got wrong three weeks ago, and they do not hold the NCERT prerequisite chain, so they answer tonight's homework without changing next month's test.

Compare it to what private coaching actually costs. The Ministry of Statistics CMS: Education 2025 survey put average annual household spending on private coaching per student at ₹3,988 in urban India and ₹1,793 in rural India. Most AI tutors in India sit at a few hundred rupees a month. Check the current figure on the provider's own pricing page before you decide.

Classes 6 to 10, NCERT Mathematics and Science, built for families rather than schools. If you need Class 11 and 12, competitive-exam coaching, or a language subject, SwaVid is not the right product.
